Paying a High Price for Damage

Question

A young man borrowed cufflinks from his friend and lost them. Is there a prohibition of ribit (interest) if he returns more expensive cufflinks to him, or pays him money in an amount greater than the price of the cufflinks he lost?

Answer

This is not considered ribit, since it is payment for a loss.
