A woman planned to take a vacation day from work; in practice, on that day one of the children was sick…

Question

Hello.

A woman planned to take a vacation day from work; in practice, on that day one of the children was sick. May she take a sick day?

Answer

Hello and blessings.

She may, since the basis of the concept of sick days is the custom of the country, which was established by force of law. Since in this case the law permits taking sick days, it is also permitted according to halacha. (The basis of this matter is that an employee has the right to take paid leave and may exercise that right at a time of illness; it is not defined such that if she was prevented from working because of the illness, this is considered an unavoidable circumstance.)
