Copying a Graphic Design

Hello, is it permissible to take an idea for a graphic design from designs made by other graphic designers, when it is not for commercial purposes but for personal use? For example: a graphic designer publishes a catalog of covers, and I see an idea there that I like. Instead of buying from her, is it permissible for me to design something similar for myself?
