Gift Received by the Messenger

Question

A yeshiva student sent his friend to buy something for him at a store, and a stranger approached the buyer and said that since he is a yeshiva student, he would pay for the purchase. To whom does the item belong, the sender or the messenger?

Answer

The item belongs to the messenger, and he should purchase an additional item for his friend with the money he was given.
