Menstrual Cycles with Bleeding from Mirena

Hello, my wife has a hormonal IUD (Mirena), which causes her menstrual cycle to appear as very light bleeding, appearing as a few spots. Should this be considered as a menstrual cycle or as spots? If so, when is the time of the menstrual cycle considered?
