Reason for the Prohibition of Sefichin

Why are sefichin prohibited?
Answer
According to the Torah, these crops are permitted for consumption and are sanctified with the holiness of the Shemitah year. However, the Sages decreed (Pesachim 51b; Rambam, Shemitah, Chapter 4) not to eat them because of transgressors who would sow their fields during the Shemitah year and claim that the crops grew on their own.
