Artificially Cultivated Meat in Halacha
Question
Answer
Dear …!
This issue has not yet been decided among the great Halachic authorities, and certainly this is not the place to decide on it.
What is clear at the moment is that even if it is decided that it is not considered meat by Jewish law, but it is a neutral product, it will be forbidden to eat it with milk, due to Mar'it Ayin (the appearance of impropriety). [At least as long as this product does not become a regular and accepted meat substitute].
Addition: I have just spoken on this matter with our teacher, the Gaon, Rabbi Avraham Fried, shlita, and his clear opinion is that since the basis is meat from an animal, and its "growth" is artificial, the entire product has the status of the meat from which it is grown. According to this, a. the basis must be kosher. b. the basis must be from a kosher and properly slaughtered animal.
