Using a Non-Kosher Toaster

Question

I am currently abroad and renting an apartment from a non-Jew. May I use the non-Jew’s bread toaster, or must I be concerned that he used it for something prohibited?

Answer

It is forbidden to use it, unless you can turn the toaster on at a high heat until the grates that the slice touches become red-hot.
