Tevilat Kelim – Fruit Basket

Question

Does a fruit basket require immersion?

Answer

Shalom u’verachah

Only a utensil made of metal or glass that was purchased from a non-Jew requires immersion. Generally, a basket is made of wood, straw, fabric, or plastic, and it does not require immersion.

Even a basket made of metal or glass depends on how it is used: if it is intended for serving fruit at the table or for eating from it, it requires immersion, like any utensil used for a meal. But if the basket is intended only as a shopping basket or for storage on a shelf, and it is not used as a serving utensil for food, it is exempt from immersion.
