Hi Im traveling next week to Japan from NY on a cruise.

Question

Hi Im traveling next week to Japan from NY on a cruise. I have a few questions: 1 the entire flight will be during daytime. Do i have to put on Tefilin again after crossing the dateline? 2. On my flight from Tokyo to New York, I leave Wednesday evening. two hours into the flight, we will have sunlight. But when we arrive in New York. It’s still Wednesday evening. Do I have to put on Tefilin again even though I leave on Wednesday evening and arrive on Wednesday evening? 3. Any halacha regarding shabbat in Japan because of the dateline? 4. Can we eat salmon on the cruise if it is double wrapped before grilling Thanks so much

Answer

Thank you for your question.

The Answers correspond to the question number;.

1. No

2.No

3. with regard to Shabbos, one has to keep the Shabbos like in Eretz Yisrael and on Sunday to be stringent and not do any me'lachos De'oryash (Biblical prohibitions) like writing and cooking, etc.

4. Since there is a prohibition of Bishul akum it would only be permitted if a Jew placed the wrapped fish on the fire.
