Shiva For One Who Wasn't Religious

Question

Does an observant Jewish family sit shiva for a son who left religious observance and plans to marry a non-Jew?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

HaGaon HaRav Fried shlita says that since he reached this point because of emotional struggles and challenges, one should not sit shiva for him. We hope that b’siyata d’Shmaya, he will return b’teshuvah shleimah.

Wishing you well.
