Self-Afflictions and Fasts in Our Times

Question

Is it permissible for a student in a yeshiva high school to undertake self-afflictions or fasts in order to atone for known sins, as is brought in Siman 571 and in the Magen Avraham there in the name of Reishit Chochmah, that in such a case one should not suffice with Torah study?

Answer

Shalom u'vrachah

In our times, the general guidance is not to increase fasts and self-afflictions, which in many cases cause only distance and spiritual falls, and not closeness to Hashem.

In any case, if it interferes with Torah study, one should not undertake either fasts or self-afflictions, but only add to the time and quality of one’s learning. .
