Discarding S’chach in the Trash
Question
Is it permitted to throw away the walls of a sukkah, laths (wooden beams for a sukkah), and s’chach (for a sukkah)? If not, what can be done so that they do not remain in my home?
Answer
Shalom u’vrachah
The s’chach and the beams do not possess sanctity, and they do not require genizah. However, since they were used for a mitzvah purpose, it is forbidden to throw them away in a degrading manner.
Therefore, in cities where the municipality collects them separately and disposes of them in a respectful place, they may be placed in the designated collection area.
In cities where there is no such arrangement, they should be wrapped in a bag and then thrown into the regular trash.
