The Kashrut of the Willow Branch on Hoshana Rabbah

Question

Do the willow branches that are beaten on Hoshana Rabbah need to be kosher like the willow branches used with the lulav? And must one be particular about this also for a boy or girl before the age of mitzvot?

Answer

Shalom u’verachah

All the details of the halachot regarding these willow branches are the same as the halachot of the willow branches in the lulav bundle, except for the number of leaves: according to the strict law, it is sufficient for there to be one leaf on each branch. However, the Rema wrote that it is unbecoming to take such a willow branch, and therefore, ideally, one should take a willow branch with many leaves.
