Lighting One Shamash for Multiple Hanukkah Menorahs

When lighting several Hanukkah menorahs next to each other, is it necessary to light a shamash for each one?

According to the law, one shamash is sufficient for all the menorahs, but it is customary to light a separate shamash for each menorah.
