Yom Kippur Fast — Gallbladder Illness

Question

A woman who is scheduled for surgery to remove her gallbladder and suffers from occasional attacks of pain — does she need to fast?

Answer

Shalom u’vrachah.

She should begin fasting, and if she experiences severe dizziness, she should begin drinking in shiurim [measured amounts] — 40 cc of liquid every 9 minutes.

If she has only severe pain, she should take pain-relief pills with a small amount of bitter water [less than the above-mentioned shiur].
