Music on the Fast of Gedaliah
Question
Is it permitted to listen to music on Tzom Gedaliah? I’d appreciate a response regarding both lively, upbeat music and quiet, uplifting music. Thank you.
Answer
Shalom uVracha,
Our teacher, HaRav Amrom Fried shlit”a, says that one should completely avoid listening to music on a fast day.
Source
Some say one shouldn’t listen to music on a fast day (see Kitzur Shulchan Aruch 122 and also 568:12).
And there are those who are stringent (and do not listen to music) already from the night before the fast (see Mishnah Berurah 550:6 and Ben Ish Chai, Year 1, Parashat Devarim Ot 5).
