Flying Abroad During the Three Weeks

Question

Is there any issue with flying abroad during the Three Weeks?

Answer

Shalom u’vrachah

Flying for business purposes or for any other necessary reason is permitted.

Regarding flying for a trip or vacation, there are several distinctions:

The days of the Three Weeks are divided into two parts: from the 17th of Tammuz until Rosh Chodesh Av, and from Rosh Chodesh Av until after Tisha B’Av.

Until Rosh Chodesh Av, there is no prohibition against flying or going on vacation. However, one should be more cautious regarding places that involve risk, since the poskim wrote that this period is more prone to danger. Flying in and of itself is not defined as “danger,” but one should pay attention to where one is going and what one will be doing there.

From Rosh Chodesh Av until after the 9th of Av, one should minimize anything intended for enjoyment.
