Tefillin Near Excrement
Question
I asked on the Beit Hora'ah line and was told that tefillin must not be near excrement, but books are allowed. I would like to understand the source and reason for the distinction?

Regarding tefillin, we find a prohibition against leaving them near excrement, whereas for books, we do not find such a prohibition.
