Someone Asked Him for Charity While He Was Putting on Tefillin
Question
Hello, Rabbi. A person intended to put on tefillin and had already taken them out of their case, and then someone came to him asking for charity: Is giving the charity before putting on the tefillin considered “passing over the mitzvot”? Why?
Answer
Hello and blessings,
This does involve the rule that one may not pass over mitzvot.
Since he is already “engaged in a mitzvah” with the mitzvah of tefillin, as opening and taking them out of the case, etc., are comparable to going to greet one’s rabbi; furthermore, preparation for a mitzvah is considered “being engaged in a mitzvah.”
