Students Who Are Beginning to Pray Shemoneh Esrei
Question
I am a teacher in sixth grade at a Beit Yaakov school. Starting tomorrow, the students will begin praying the Shemoneh Esrei prayer silently, rather than the whole class together. I urgently need to know which halachot I should teach them regarding passing in front of someone who is praying: what is permitted and what is forbidden? I saw that it is forbidden to pass on any side of the person praying, but I do not know whether that is practical at this age—that they should wait so long and manage to be careful about it. May I tell them that it is only forbidden to pass directly in front of the girl who is praying?
Answer
Hello and blessings
There is no need to teach them this halachah at the initial stage. First they should learn the halachot of the prayer itself: what is said, the bowing and prostrations; afterward they should learn the halachot surrounding prayer.
