Studying at the Expense of the Time for Kriyat Shema According to Magen Avraham

Is a yeshiva student who studies until late at night required to shorten his study time in order to make the time for the morning Kriyat Shema according to Magen Avraham, or in such a case can he rely on the Gra? And does this depend on the differences between Ashkenazim and Sephardim?
