After-Blessing on Food Before a Meal
Question
When one eats food before the meal, must one recite an after-blessing over it, or is it covered by Birkat Hamazon?
Answer
Shalom and blessings
There are several cases regarding this.
If one ate fruit, vegetables, or foods whose blessing is Shehakol before the meal, he recites Borei Nefashot before the meal.
If one ate a cooked dish made from the five grains before the meal, he should recite Al Hamichyah.
If one ate pat haba’ah bekisnin [cakes or cookies], he should not recite Al Hamichyah, and should intend to exempt it with Birkat Hamazon.
If one ate something for the sake of the meal, such as a sharp or salty food to stimulate the appetite; drank a beverage so that he would be able to eat; or drank the wine of Kiddush so that it would be permissible for him to eat.
