Who gets a blessing under the huppah?

Question

We hired a special rabbi with a very pleasant voice who professionally says the blessings under the huppah. Buy I would like my father to say some of the blessings. However, my fiancé claims that my father doesn’t know the professional melody, and if the blessings aren’t said with the right melody, then the whole future happiness of the couple will be destroyed. Should we be afraid of that?

Answer

Dear …!

With your permission, I wish you mazal tov and success on that great day! May you merit to build a faithful home in Israel, and to see true and blessed generations.

The Sages of the Talmud revealed to us that the surest way to have happiness and joy at home is mutual respect. The husband has to respect his wife, and the wife – her husband. This is what causes the Divine Presence to dwell in your home. And this is the best formula for a happy and successful life.

Besides that, respecting your parents and your spouse’s parents brings a great blessing and longevity into the home. This connects you to the traditions of the previous generations and to the wellsprings of holiness and of prosperity of the Jewish people. Therefore, respecting your father takes precedence over all other considerations and omens.

According to the law, the melody makes no difference whatsoever. And even if the father won’t say the blessing exactly according to the accepted pronunciation, the is no problem with this at all. All the more so the melody is not a problem. It is definitely fitting to honor the couple’s fathers with blessings. May it be G-g’s will that in the merit of honoring your parents you’ll have a happy life and a home of Torah and nachas from your children.
