Tithing Wedding Gift Money

Question

Hello! I received a sum of money as a wedding gift. Do I need to give tithes from it? And another question, I am learning full-time and my wife does not make any money. The question is, do we need to give tithes from the money we receive from our parents and from my Kollel, even though the money is just enough for our livelihood?

Answer

Dear …!
There are two issues here. A. Tithing from a gift - the rule is that any money given for a specific purpose is exempt from tithing. And money given for you to use as you wish is subject to tithing.
B. The obligation of tithing for a person in need - someone whose salary is not enough for his needs is exempt from giving tithes. Therefore, you should calculate whether you can afford to give.
