Observing Shabbos in the Army - Without Shabbos Candles

Question

Hello, I am a female combat soldier. I have decided to observe the Shabbos, and I am frustrated because I have no way to obtain Shabbos candles. Moreover, we have operations on Shabbos night. What should I do?

Answer

Greetings,
In this response, I refrain from addressing the issue of a female soldier - but I will point out that part of the struggle against women's conscription is because the atmosphere in the IDF cannot accommodate a Jewish woman and her observance of commandments, regardless of other serious problems involved.
First, I truly commend you for accepting this despite your complex situation at this moment. You have decided to start observing the Shabbos now and not postpone it to another time.
Initially, turn to the military rabbi and receive instructions from him about what is life-threatening and what is not, and how to behave in the army on the Shabbos. It is your right and duty to insist that they allow you to behave according to these instructions, which are the Chief of Staff's orders.
Observing the Shabbos includes 'remember' and 'observe' - that is, a prohibition to desecrate the Shabbos, and a positive commandment to honor the Shabbos. I assume that the Shabbos menu is more festive, and even if not, try to add even a small thing to the menu.
Shabbos candles are also part of fulfilling the commandment of honoring and enjoying the Shabbos. The main commandment is to ensure proper lighting on Shabbos night in necessary places, especially where the Shabbos night meal is eaten. Therefore, even if you turn off the light in the room and then turn it back on for the Shabbos, or if you light a flashlight that will be on all Shabbos, so you have more light on the Shabbos without needing to light a light on the Shabbos itself, you fulfill the commandment of lighting candles. Of course, if possible, it is preferable to light with real candles and fire, but in case it is not possible, this fulfills the obligation.
Have a blessed and peaceful Shabbos.
