Use of a Mechanical Bell
Question
I was standing by the door of a locked yard on Shabbos night, and they did not hear me at all in the house, so I rang a mechanical bell. Powerful ringing of the bell was heard in the house, and they immediately opened the door for me. I was afraid I’d be left outside all night, so I rang the bell. Did I desecrate the Shabbos?
Answer
In this case, it was permitted to make a sound with a bell that does not produce a pleasant sound, but one should be careful that this does not happen again.
