Mechanical Bell on Shabbos
Question
We have a completely mechanical doorbell. Is it permissible to use it on Shabbos?
Answer
If it emits a pleasant sound, it is forbidden. If it emits an unpleasant sound, there is a disagreement about this, and it is advisable to be stringent when there is no pressing need to use it.
