Question

Is it permissible to knock on the door on Shabbos in a regular manner? I was in the Old City and saw that some people are careful not to knock on Shabbos.

Answer

Indeed, the opinion of the Gaon of Vilna (GRA) is that it is forbidden, and therefore you saw those who follow the GRA's stringent practice. However, the Mishnah Berurah ruled that widely accepted custom is to follow the opinion of the Shulchan Aruch that it is permissible, and there is no need to be concerned about it.
