Using a Baby's Rattle on Shabbat

Question

Is it permissible to soothe a baby on Shabbat by playing with his rattle, and is doing it in an unusual way (“shinui”) make it permitted?

Answer

This is forbidden, and the “shinui” (changing the way this is done) does not make it permitted when the sound is produced by an object, unlike clapping hands where the sound is produced by the human body.
