Installation of an Electronic Device for Regulating Urination

Question

I suffer from urinary incontinence, and it has been suggested to me to install a permanent device that regulates urination by my pressing an electronic remote control. The doctor explained to me that after the installation, not releasing the urine in time constitutes a serious danger and is defined as a life-threatening situation. Is it permissible for me to install the device knowing that I will need to violate the Sabbath? Currently, I am constantly leaking, I am always with a diaper, there is a smell, and I cannot pray.

Answer

It is permissible to install the device, and on the Sabbath, it is permissible to release when necessary, according to the instructions of a doctor and a Rabbi. They will determine what frequency is defined as necessary to avoid a life-threatening situation.

Source

The matter is similar to sailing at sea when one will need to violate the Sabbath due to a life-threatening situation. It is permitted to set sail three days before the Sabbath and for the sake of a commandment even on the eve of the Sabbath. The installation of the device so that one can pray is considered a need for fulfilling a commandment. (Shulchan Aruch, section 248, paragraph 1).
