Items found in a synagogue

Question

There is a large accumulation of forgotten items in our synagogue, but there used to be no sign stating that everyone who enters agrees that his things will be thrown out if forgotten. Is it permissible to throw these items out into the trash, since everyone knows it is not possible to deal with all these things. And if it is forbidden to throw them away, what can be done with them, considering the large quantity?

Answer

It is permitted to throw out the items that had been left there for a long period of time.
