Where to light Shabbos candles?

Question

My wife lights Shabbos candles with olive oil in the kitchen, and not in the dining area. We can’t see the candles from the dining area. We can’t light oil lamps where we eat because our little kids fool around during the meal, and we’re afraid of a fire. We could light wax little candles where we eat, though. What should we do? Should we just light little wax candles where we eat, or should we light both oil candles in the kitchen and wax candles in the dining area? And if we do light in both places, on which lighting should we recite the blessing?

Answer

  1. Your wife should continue lighting the oil lamps in the kitchen, and she should also light wax candles where you eat.
  2. She should recite a blessing before lighting the wax candles, but she should have in mind the oil lamps as well. Then she should go and light the oil lamps right away, without speaking between the two lightings.
