Supplemental prayers

Question

To my considerable regret, I missed my shacharis and minchah prayers (the morning and the afternoon prayers). Can I at least recite the aravis (night) prayer now?

Answer

Dear …!

If you missed a prayer owing to circumstances beyond your control, such as excessive pressure at work, you can compensate for the last prayer that you skipped. However, you are only allowed to recite a compensatory prayer after you’ve recited the prayer whose time is now. Thus, when the time comes for the maariv (night) prayer, you have to first recite maariv, and then you recite another shmone-esre prayer as a compensation for the missed minchah. You cannot compensate the shacharit prayer that you skipped.
