Stopping car engine on Shabbos

Question

If a person brought a sick person to the hospital on Shabbos, can he now stop his car engine on Shabbos?

Answer

Dear …!

Normally, it is prohibited to turn off the engine, even in case that leaving it running might drain the battery or cause some other type of damage to the vehicle. But if you suspect that you might need the car to help a sick person this Shabbos, or in case that not turning off the engine might cause damage or injury to a human being, for example, if it presents a fire hazard etc., you can ask a gentile to turn it off. If there is no gentile to ask, you can turn it off yourself, provided you do it in an unusual manner.
