Eating and drinking before kiddush

Question

Is one allowed to drink before kiddush?

Answer

After shacharis, the morning prayer, when one already became obligated to make kiddush, one is not allowed to drink even water before kiddush, unless he doesn’t have any wine. However, before the morning prayer, one is allowed to drink water or coffee, for one is allowed to drink before prayer without having made kiddush. On the other hand, someone who is physically weak and therefore allowed to eat before prayer, has to make kiddush before eating, even though he hasn’t yet recited the morning prayer.
