Water pump operating on Shabbos

Question

I live in a high rise. There is a water pump, and every time someone opens a faucet, this causes the pump (which uses the “inverter” principle) to work with greater intensity. Am I allowed to open faucets on Shabbos? An electrician told me that there is a device of the Mishmeres Shabbos institute. I wanted to know, do we have to install this device, or is it recommended, or is it meaningless? And if we are obligated to get it, or if it is recommended, where and how do we get it?

Answer

Dear …!

It is recommended to install the device from the Mishmeres Shabbos institute, and one can rely on their certification. Whether this is an absolute obligation, or just a good idea, is hard to tell without additional details. But at any rate, Shabbos is worth our respect, and we should be stringent in its observance. So, it’s definitely worth our effort to try to be careful in observing Shabbos, and it is proper to try to be more stringent on this issue.

You can contact the Mishmeres Shabbos Institute in following ways:
