A table outside the Sukkah

Question

I have a small sukkah with a little table in it. When I entertain guests who are not obligated to sit in a sukkah, I put a large table next to the small one outside the sukkah, and join the two tables together. Is there a problem with that?

Answer

Dear …!

In the opinion of the Mishnah Berurah, this is perfectly fine, because even if you have one table, and a greater part of it is outside the sukkah, and only the smaller part is inside, that’s still kosher. But according to the opinion of the Birkei Yosef, who holds that the greater part of the table has to be inside the sukkah, you have to make a separation between the table that’s in the sukkah and the table that’s outside the sukkah. There should be some space between the two tables, and you should not use one tablecloth to cover them both.
