Sore throat medicine

Question

Is one allowed to take lozenges against sore throat that are called Starpen? It has no kashruth certificate.

Answer

Dear …, may you have a speedy recovery!

If we are talking about a lozenge that doesn’t taste good, it doesn’t need to be kosher-certified. If it does taste good, and you would not be endangering your life by not taking it, it needs to be kosher. (But you don’t have to look for high-level kashruth, like for other foods.)

I don’t have any information about this particular medicine.

You can try asking the BaDaTZ of Jerusalem. Because they investigate the contents of different medicines for the purpose of giving them a Pesach certification, they also have much knowledge about which substances go into making different drugs.  [026700200]
