Making a gazebo into a sukkah

Question

I have a gazebo in my back yard, whose whole roof is made of thin planks, which lie at an angle, with small spaces between the planks. What do I have to do to turn this gazebo into a kosher sukkah?

Answer

Dear …!

According to the opinion of the Shulchan Oruch, the law is that you have to renew a part of your gazebo in the name of fulfilling the mitzvah of sukkah. That is, you have to lift up some of the planks, in the total area of ten by ten cm. (handbreadth by handbreadth), and put them back down in the name of making a sukkah. The opinion of the Mishnah Berurah is that, since the planks were put there to produce shade, even though they weren’t made specifically for a sukkah, the law is that they’re kosher for a sukkah — on the condition that most of the gazebo is covered and shaded by these planks. However, a more perfect way to fulfill this commandment is to renew some of the schach in the name of making a sukkah.

However, if the planks are there from last year, you do have to “renew” your schach.

(Schach is the material (tree branches, reeds, etc.) that is used for covering the sukkah — the Sukkoth booth.)
