Buying vegetables with the heksher of “Rabbanut”
Question
Is one allowed to buy vegetables that have the “Rabbanut” heksher?
Answer
In a regular year, one is allowed to buy vegetables with a “Rabbanut” heksher, and to tithe them (that is, to take out trumah, maaser, etc.). But in a sabbatical year they are prohibited, since most such vegetables grow on lands, which were fictitiously sold to gentiles (“heter mechirah”). These vegetables have the status of “sprouts of the sabbatical year”, which one is not allowed to eat.
