Oven in a hotel

Question

If someone is staying in a hotel or renting a vacation home, and he doesn’t know whether the place is keeping kosher, and if it is, at what level, how can one use the oven there?

Answer

You can use the oven by wrapping all the food in two coverings. Alternatively, you can run it on its maximum heat setting for an hour, and then you can wrap the food in only one covering. As for the baking trays, which are usually coated with enamel; you can make them kosher by placing them in the oven for an hour and running the oven at its maximum heat setting. However, if there is a suspicion that they were used for non-kosher meat, you would have to heat them to the point where they become red-hot (“libun chamur”), so, practically speaking, it’s impossible to kasher them. If you don’t have a choice, you can use them by placing disposable trays on top of them. As for the grate, you can kasher it by placing it in the oven for an hour and running the oven at the maximum heat setting.
