How to transfer ownership of candles

Question

In all the cases of candle lighting, about which it says that one has to transfer part of their ownership to the guests, how does one transfer ownership?

Answer

There are three ways of transferring ownership to others:

  1. By giving money — the guests give money to the host, or someone else give the host money for the guests, so as to acquire a part of the candles for them.
  2. By lifting up the candles — the guests lift up the candles or someone else lifts the candles up for them.
  3. By lifting a “handkerchief” — one has to lift up an item of clothing that belongs to the guests, or someone else can acquire a part in the candles for the guests by having the host lift up an item of clothing that belongs to him (to the one who is acquiring for the guests). Ideally, this person should not be someone who lives in the same household. It can be a neighbor or a married child who does not live with his parents. A less preferred option is to make this acquisition through the host’s wife. What should really be done in this case is that the wife should acquire the candles for herself, and then the husband can make an acquisition for the guests.
