Reading Before Washing One's Hands in the Morning

Question

Hello My 12 year old daughter likes reading in bed in the morning for 20m before getting up, she says it helps her to wake up but we tell her she should do Netilas and Brachos before doing any reading. Should we push for that or not? She is not a rebellious child but this is something that’s very important to her.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question!

You are correct that “nagel vasser” / washing one’s hands first thing upon arising in the morning, is important.

However, If you told her once, and she knows your thoughts and the importance of this mitzvah, you can leave her alone. it is not advisable to pressure her. Be'ezrat Hashem as she matures, she will wash her hands more promptly upon awakening on her own.
