Talmud Abbreviation Mas.

Question

I am viewing an interesting video that mentions various references to Talmud writings. One of those references is Talmud, Mas. Yoma 39b 4-6. I only want to know what the abbreviation "Mas." means. I have searched the internet and cannot find a definition for it.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The abbreviation "Mas." is short for "Masechet" which means "tractate" or "volume". In other words, your reference is for the volume of Talmud called "Yoma" on page 39b.
