Jew turned Christian

Question

My friend was born of Orthodox Jewish parents but later became a Christian & a staunch believer in Jesus. She still professes to be a Jew but I think she has renounced Judism & can no longer be considered a Jew. Can an Orthodox Jew marry her in Shul?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question!

There is no such thing as converting out of Judaism. A Jew who practices another religion is merely a Jew who is currently sinning – but he remains a Jew. Such a person need only regret and repent from having done this.

You should encourage your friend to reach out to her local orthodox rabbi and ask for assistance in re-joining the Jewish community and performing mitzvot.

One should not marry such a person until a proper repentance and re-joining of the Jewish community is confirmed.
