Conversion and Circumcision

Question

Hi, I am about to convert, I had a circumcision but I read that in some cases a convert will require to do another one, what are those cases? mi rabbi has advised me not to think about it because we must go one step at the time but I am stil curious, my glans is exposed all the time and my frenulum was basically removed

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

That is correct. Even someone previously circumcised will require what is called "hatafat dam brit" in order to convert. In this procedure, a small drop of blood is drawn from that area in what can be called a “symbolic circumcision.” It is quick and essentially painless.

Even a Jewish child born circumcised will require hatafat dam brit.
