Aaron's Breastplate: As Jewelry

Question

I would like to create a piece of jewelry incorporating the 12 stones from Aaron's breastplate but I have concerns that this might be seen as disrespectful. My intention is not to wear it as a "breastplate" but as a reminder to myself. Would doing this be seen as blasphemous my Jewish friends?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

For the benefit of readers, let’s briefly describe the breastplate of the High Priest.

The breastplate, known as the “Choshen Mishpat,” was comprised of 12 different types of precious stones arranged in four rows. Each stone represented a different one of the 12 tribes, and every stone had one of the tribes’ name engraved on it.

When the High Priest needed to ask G-d a question, the answer would come by means of the relevant letters, comprising the words of the answer, lighting up among the engraved names of the 12 tribes.

It is worth noting that the engraving of the names of the tribes was not done with a knife or the like, but rather, by means of a worm known as the “ shamir ” that would magically engrave the stones. This was partly due to the ban on using metal or iron utensils in the service of G-d in the Temple as metal and iron are associated with warfare.

Your idea of creating a piece of jewelry intended to recall the breastplate is not Halachicly advisable.
