Torn Tzitzit

Question

What to do if one or two of my 8 strings of my tzitzit are torn and ripped ?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It would depend on how the tzitzit strings were tied;

There is a way to keep four strings on one side together by first tying them as a bunch, and then to start the tying and knotting. In this manner, the four strings will remain the same ones on one side throughout the tying of the tzitzit.

If the strings were tied in this way, then even if four strings from one side tore, it would still be kosher since the strings on the other side are still intact, we can say not the entire string was torn.
However, if one string on one side was torn and a string on the other side was torn, then it would be passul.

If when tying the strings, one was not careful to separate the two groups of strings, then if one string ripped, it is still kosher.
However, if two strings tore, either on the same side, or one on each side, it would then be passul.
