Yom Tov Sheini: Working

Question

I am new to keeping shabbos and the yuntifs, and I got off for the holidays, except I forgot to take off for the second days and it was too late once I found out. How do I not feel so guilty?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is so wonderful to hear that you have been observing mitzvot. May you see joy and happiness in your lifestyle change.

Working on the second day of Yom Tov is forbidden. As such, gently speak to your boss telling him how important it is for you to have off on the second days of Yom Tov. Explain to him that it is universal orthodox practice not to work and attend synagogue services.

Perhaps your local rabbi and can give you a letter testifying to this.

If you think it won't help then you should the day off as holiday days or say that you are sick and somehow later in the year find a way to pay back your boss for that missing day.

If working on Yom Tov has already taken place, you should do "teshuva" by regretting having done so and committing not to work on Yom Tov Sheini again.

Good luck with your observance of mitzvot!
